She was a Catholic nun and missionary, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and sick. She became known for her work in Calcutta, India, founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation that runs hospices and homes for people with terminal illnesses, HIV/AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. She was known for her selfless devotion to helping the less fortunate and for living a simple and austere lifestyle. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2016. She passed away on 5th September 1997, in Calcutta, India, at the age of 87.
